Cats do the weirdest things
Now, I may be alone here, but I’ve had the pleasure of meeting five cats on my property in the last year, and they’ve all been a little bit weird in their own rights. I’ve now adopted two of them (or should I say they just decided to move in), and I’ve got to say, my two babies, Buddy and Mini, would rival any cat out there for the weirdest cats out.
Cat parents out there, feel free to join me in sharing your weirdo cat stories, but these are my top five moments from the last year and a bit…
The window was closed
Buddy is the older of my two. He’s nearly two years old, and he’s a big cat. When he runs or chases something, you can hear it and feel it as he pounds the pavement, so to speak. However, Buddy loves looking out windows. He loves pushing the blinds to the side and seeing what’s going on. During the summer, we often have the window open so he can sit on the ledge and see what’s happening in the outside world. In winter, we don’t. Buddy forgets that. In winter, Buddy does the usual and pops his head up over the ledge to see what he can see, but then Buddy does this thing. He forgets the window is closed and promptly jumps himself onto the ledge, only to hit the window and fall to the floor. He did it once. We thought that would be it. But since that first time we’ve heard him do it at least twice more.
Mice don’t go there … or there …
Buddy’s a machine. We use those laser toys to play with him and he’s fast! With those dangly toys, he’s ferocious. He’ll claim his prize, rip it from your hands, and stalk out of the room with it in his mouth. It’s scary. And we’ve commented many times on how we wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of his mad chasing and grabbing skills. At the start of winter, Buddy went on a mission to eradicate our property (and probably the neighbours, and maybe even the neighbourhood) of rodents. He definitely didn’t have the time of day for the little things to encroach his space. So he removed the problem. One by one, day by day, Buddy would bring us a gift. He’d place them all under the dining room table and look at my partner, Zak, and I in a way that said, “There you useless humans. There’s dinner.”
I sat Buddy down one day (after the third or fourth day), and said to him nicely, “Look, it’d be really great if you didn’t leave us mice under the dining room table, dude. It’s a bit gross.” He looked at me. I thought he’d digested the conversation — not the mouse — but the next morning I went into my wardrobe and guess what I found! A lovely mouse present right in the middle of the floor. YUM.
Where did you find that hot dog?
Now, this one is the most recent, and also, arguably, the weirdest. As you know, from the recounting above, Buddy’s a bit of a mouse-catching machine. Recently, I heard Buddy come back inside the cat door, meowing a little, sounding a little muffled. We’re not off to a good start here. As you know, Buddy’s favourite place to deliver our gifts is under the dining table. And that’s where he headed. He starts playing around with whatever he’s brought up, so all I can do is tap Zak, and keep repeating, “He’s got a mouse! He’s got a mouse!” Buddy did not have a mouse. Buddy had a hot dog… A frankfurter sausage. He’d manage to sniff out someone’s sausage and bring it home to play with — not eat. That was even too processed for my snooty cat.
Meow louder, I can’t quite hear you
Now, Mini is a bit of a different story. She’s only nine months old and is still quite the kitten. She chases feet, she follows you everywhere, and she loves to wind Buddy up. She’s stressful to say the least. But one of Mini’s great tricks is knowing how to get out the cat door, but not knowing how to get back in. Mini loves to sit by the front door and just meow her head off until someone opens the door for her. This could be at 5am in the morning, 10pm at night, or anything in-between. She’s a pain. It’s lucky she’s so cute!
I’m not hungry, but I don’t want her to eat it
Another one in Mini’s repertoire is the fact that she’s not hungry, or turned her nose up at her food, but then when another cat comes to visit, and we feed her, she’s into the other cat’s food immediately. If it’s dinner time and I’ve served her food first, she’ll start eating for a millisecond until I start serving Buddy’s food. Then as soon as his comes out she ditches her plate and goes straight for his. Feeding time is a mix of avoiding spilling gravy down your clothes and shifting kittens to the other side of the room. Read: chaos.
As much as cats have their quirks and weirdo moments, I wouldn’t swap them for the world. They’re the best, craziest little companions and really do provide endless amounts of entertainment.
